When Failures Interfere with Faith

February 9, 2016 By: Angela Parlin

failures faith grace The other afternoon turned into a no-good, very bad day.

A couple of my boys fought with each other, several times an hour. They lashed out repeatedly and required me to stop what I was doing (mostly homeschooling) too many times for another calm conversation about what was going on in their hearts.

By the end of the day, I threw in a few not-so-calm conversations because I was over it. I was mad. I was venting.

But then I remembered the song that started my day, words which rose as a prayer from my heart~

“Holy Spirit, you are welcome here.

Come flood this place, and fill the atmosphere.

Your glory God is what our hearts long for,

To be overcome by your Presence, Lord.”

Francesca Battistelli, “Holy Spirit”

I stood before the sink, overcome with discouragement rather than overcome by the Presence of God. I didn’t even want to think about entering His presence. I felt like He was disappointed in me and the way I handled the boys.

Sometimes my failures get in the way of my faith.

Does this happen to you? Things are going sideways, and you’re making it so much worse. Instead of taking it to God, you want to hide from Him.

Then the devil cheers wildly (or he would, if he did that sort of thing). He’s been hoping to discourage you, and now he wants to keep you focused on your failures, your sins, your messes, to keep you thinking there’s no way out.

But the truth is, God knows us through and through, and He loves us still.

God invites us to come and draw near to His throne—always. Not only when we’re good—but when we need Him most.

Because of Jesus.

Let us then {fearlessly and confidently and boldly} draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy (for our failures) and find grace to help in good time for every need. Hebrews 4:16, AMP

Grace means we are invited to come before God with confidence—based on Jesus’ record, not our own behavior.

Although I’m always learning more of grace, I struggle to think in terms of grace.

From childhood, we’ve been learning an entirely different system. We’ve been learning we can have a treat—but only if we’re good. We’ve been learning we’ll be rewarded for doing good and punished for doing bad. School days taught us that. Even Santa taught us that.

But Grace says, draw near to God through Jesus Christ, because Jesus stands in as our high priest, making a way for us to come to God.

Because of His grace, we come without fear into God’s presence—in humble freedom, at liberty, unedited.

At the throne of Grace, we find our faithfully compassionate God, handing out mercy to cover over our failures, giving us grace to encourage us, to grow us, and to help us stay away from sin.

So don’t let your failures interfere with your faith. Approach the throne of grace and find mercy. Come with confidence, based on what Jesus has done for you—not what you deserve.

As the song ends, “Let us become more aware of Your presence! Let us experience the glory of Your goodness!”

Amen? Amen!!!

Is Your Faith Real?

February 2, 2016 By: Angela Parlin

faith real rest unbeliefHow does it feel, to know that God sees everything?

That He sees you when you’re sleeping…

He knows when you’re awake…

He knows if you’ve been bad or good, so—

Wait. I got caught up in a pretend story about someone else for a minute. Yet the above is all true, if we’re talking about God Almighty.

Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight.

Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account. Hebrews 4:13

I learned in elementary school the word Omniscient–meaning God sees and knows everything. Along with Omnipotent {God is All-Powerful} and Omnipresent {God is Always Near}.

Nothing escapes God’s notice. He’s aware of everything that happens here, everything in you and around you, and the same for me.

In a lot of ways, this brings comfort. He is a good, good Father, and He loves us more than we possibly understand. But as we see in the verse above, this truth also brings with it accountability.

Hebrews 4:13 gives another reason why we should make every effort to enter God’s rest.

In my last post on Hebrews, I wrote about the living and active Word of God, which the writer associates here with the work of God Himself, as if they’re one and the same.

In this context, the writer is teaching that God knows where there’s rooted faith and where there’s only intellectual agreement with the facts. God detects our unbelief, and for it, we will answer to Him.

God knows where there’s real faith, and this is what He desires for us all.

He looks for faith resulting in action, faith that perseveres. God is looking for hearts fully committed to Him.

The eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him. 2 Chronicles 16:8

Nothing is hidden from His sight, because His eyes range throughout the earth. What an incredible picture of God!

But it’s also a sobering picture. Nothing is hidden from Him. E-ver-y-thing is uncovered and laid bare before His eyes. Before the eyes of whom?

Before the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account. That’s the sobering reality. The part we all must face and many try to ignore, the part many try to forget.

This is where that question comes into play. How does it feel, to know that God sees everything?

Does He find true faith in you? If you know you have faith, you ultimately have peace. You also have conviction–but over it all, peace.

He reveals deep and hidden things; He knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with Him. Daniel 2:22

Today, may we fear and respect and worship our Father who formed our hearts and sees into them, who wades into the deep and uncovers hidden things. May He find faith that is real and hearts that are fully committed to Him.

The Fire Alive In You

January 19, 2016 By: Angela Parlin

fire Word of GodI was just lying down to sleep, when out of the silence, I heard my little girl crying.

She had been asleep for a while, and woke up with a scary dream.

We laid there, talking about her dream, about how the enemy bothers her in the same way he often bothers me. I placed my hands on her beautiful head and prayed over her in the name of Jesus.

And then the best thing in all the world happened.

“Mommy, do you think you could read me some of my Bible now?”

My heart swelled. This is something I love about being with my kids day after day.

I have the privilege in this season of life, to lead these little people to the truth so many times–that they end up leading me to it.

What a joy to watch them accept God’s Word into their lives, into their questions, into their fears. This was just a little glimpse of that, but one for which I am grateful.

I had been studying Hebrews 4 for days, thinking about writing my next post in this series on the book of Hebrews.

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

The word FOR at the beginning of this verse tells us that it points backward to the previous verses. Because the Word is living, active, sharp, piercing, and discerning—we are to make every effort to enter God’s rest, {as I wrote in my last post on Hebrews 4}.

Just before this verse comes a warning–to NOT wander through life in restless unbelief.

Instead, we should trust God, persevere in faith, and fight unbelief by regularly putting the Word into our hearts and minds.

So let’s break down what this verse teaches us about the Word of God:

God’s Word is a Living Power.

The apostle John wrote this in one of his letters to the church~

I write to you young men, because you are strong and the Word of God lives in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:14b

The Word is not only alive and powerful, but it lives inside all of us who believe. That’s an incredible truth, isn’t it?

God’s Word is at work to accomplish His purposes.

So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:11

God’s Word is the sharpest sword.

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17

God’s Word pierces down to our deepest parts.

Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” Acts 2:37, ESV

God’s Word exposes our true thoughts and motives.

“Is not my word like fire,” declares the Lord, “and like a hammer that breaks a rock in pieces?” Jeremiah 23:29, NIV

Often, our motives are a mix of purely human and truly spiritual. We need God’s Word each day, to help us sort them out.

Is the Word of God like a burning fire within you, or has your flame died down?

May the living, powerful Word of God work in us today, like refining fire.

Faith + Trust = Rest

January 5, 2016 By: Angela Parlin

Rest Make Every EffortHow well are you resting these days?

That seems like a strange question to ask the first week of January, doesn’t it? Shouldn’t I focus on measurable goals and making something of 2016 instead?

Or does the quality of rest in our lives greatly affect the quality of our days?

Jesus desires to give each of us His rest, and in the gospels, He tells us how to enter into it. “Come to me,” He said, because He is the way. The transaction looks like this: When we come to Him, He gives us rest. Or we don’t come to Him, and then we miss out.

Make note of that–It’s possible for us to miss the rest He offers.

Hebrews 4 warns believers—don’t fall short of God’s rest.

Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands–let us be careful–that none of you be found to have fallen short of it. Hebrews 4:1

So then, what is the rest God offers us?

In the fullest sense, God’s rest is a future promise–a heavenly resting place. We cannot enter into it by proving ourselves enough, or by hoping in our own skills and gifts and actions. It’s impossible. We are not that kind of righteous.

We only enter God’s rest through faith in the finished work of our Savior, Jesus Christ.

As we turn all the details of our lives over to Him, letting Jesus rule as our Lord, we enter His rest like never before.

But there’s more. While on earth, God’s offer of rest also involves a deep, settled peace that fills our hearts and minds, no matter what happens within our days.

How, then, do we be sure to enter His rest? Again, only by faith.

In the wilderness, the wandering Israelites lacked faith in God and His word. They doubted God’s plans and promises. They wanted to go back to what they knew, which was slavery. They didn’t trust God, so instead they lived in restless unbelief.

It doesn’t have to be like that for us!

Don’t fall short of God’s rest by failing to persevere in your faith.

Don’t become complacent with unbelief.

Don’t allow a sinful, unbelieving heart to move you away from God.

Instead, “Let us make every effort to enter that rest” (v. 11).

Let us fight unbelief with regular cleansing by the Word.

Let us strive diligently, to work out our faith, but never to hope in our works.

Do you struggle to trust everything in your life to Jesus? Do you have a hard time letting go of outcomes and relying on Him rather than on yourself?

Sometimes I do. But as I continue to work out my faith in God, I certainly find deeper rest.

Is your heart at rest in Jesus, friend?

It’s never too late to start there, whether 5 days into the new year or 50. Look to Him. Ask Him to help your unbelief. Be diligent to trust in and rely on Him. Enter His rest.

The father instantly cried out, “I do believe, but help me overcome my unbelief!” Mark 9:24, NLT

The Power of Encouragement

December 15, 2015 By: Angela Parlin

encourageI’ve underestimated the power of encouraging words.

Specifically, those that roll off my own tongue.

But the truth is, people have spoken words to me, at times, which have inspired me and given me courage for months. Actually, years. I’m thinking of someone who prayed words of scripture over me years ago, that I’ll never forget. And others who were concerned about me, who asked choice questions and completely changed the direction I was heading.

Never underestimate the power of an encouraging word.

But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. Hebrews 3:13

Encouragement is so important, that through it, we have the ability to keep each other from being hardened toward the Lord.

In my last post, Don’t Let Your Heart Be Hardened (click here), I wrote about the danger of wandering—of turning our hearts from the Lord until they’re calloused and hard and doubting His goodness.

A hardened heart lacks confidence in God and wallows in unbelief.

A person with a hardened heart doesn’t want to be called out or questioned about anything they’re doing.

Hardened people hold onto excuses and arguments, unwilling to examine themselves and let go of their own sin.

At times, any one of us may have a hardened heart, but we should be on guard against this, so that none of us become truly hardened by sin.

Instead, we should encourage one another day after day, which means we need each other. We don’t have things under control on our own. These days, we are tempted to think we only need Jesus to get through this life–yet He told us repeatedly that we need to help each other.

To encourage, in the Greek, means to stir someone up to action, or to exhort them to do what they need to do. To exhort is to seriously encourage, invite, call near, and be of good comfort.

Encouragement is cushioned by love and care. It’s coming alongside someone, desiring what’s best for them.

But sometimes, we (or our loved ones) are already deceived by sin.

“Sin appears fair, but is vile; it appears pleasant, but is destructive; it promises much, but performs nothing. The deceitfulness of sin hardens the soul; one sin allowed makes way for another; and every act of sin confirms the habit.” ~Matthew Henry’s Concise Commentary

Sin promises so much more than it provides.

Each day, we are tempted to turn toward sin, which is turning away from God.

Each day, we are in danger of seeing through the distorted view sin gives us.

Each day, we’re tempted to swallow down sin’s lies and believe them.

For sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, deceived me, and through the commandment put me to death. Romans 7:11

Let’s look out for each other lovingly. Let’s speak with genuine concern into each other’s lives, and let’s receive encouragement and exhortation from other believers as well. Let’s do it on a personal level, with those we know, instead of on public platforms.

Let’s never underestimate the battles we all fight daily–or the power of encouragement.

He who trusts in his own heart is a fool: but whoever walks wisely will be delivered. Proverbs 28:26
